Even though we woke to rain, race day turned out to be fantastic! By the time we traveled from the North Shore to Mt. Eden, the rain subsided to a light drizzle and we signed in at the registration booth. Most people there planned to walk, but Drew and I joined the small rank of 5K and 10K runners at the front of the pack after this invigorating dance warm-up.
I was thrilled when I crossed the finish line to see that I had accomplished my sub-30 minute goal! I ran the 5K in 29:19 and Drew ran his 10K in 43:55. Since I finished before him I was able to grab a shot of his big finish.
After everyone made their way back to the park it was time for door prizes. Back when I crossed the finish line the staff and volunteers struck up a conversation with me and learned we were visiting New Zealand from the States (and that we support Mercy Ministries back home). But they took us both off guard when they announced that fact over the microphone and handed us some great prizes!
Some girls from the home then came over and introduced themselves. It was so great to actually meet the people who the race was benefiting! They were all so sweet and appreciative that we would support A Girl Called Hope while we were on holiday.
We’re almost halfway to our fundraising goal–so if you still want to make a donation, you can do so on our Girl Called Hope fundraising page. Thanks!!
