Little Hero not only saves the world. Little Hero and it’s owners, Christian & Kirianne, hosted us for 2 full weeks, during which we spent time at the beach, babysat Grete & Skye (3 year old twins), served coffee and feijoa tarts at the shop (and counted inventory for the stock take), helped build their website, watched movies, and made new friends at church.
Check out www.littlehero.co.nz to see what Christian originally designed, then Drew tweaked and completed for them. We love their color scheme and design!
We also loved that they carried all the specialty organic products that we became so used to finding at home (Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar, spelt flour, almond butter). And we discovered raw, unsteamed New Zealand oats. Especially yummy with organic apple syrup, raisins, and apple pieces for breakfast!
Drew especially had a blast with Christian. Christian is an artist, so he mucked around at home most days, trading his bright orange footy pajamas for paint-splattered coveralls. His work has been featured in many exhibitions around the country! But when he’s not painting or sculpting, he is surfing.
We went with him a couple times, once only watching (because the waves were far too big to be anything but dangerous for us newbies).
We also walked to Winstone’s Cove quite often–about 200m from the driveway! At high tide, Drew and Christian would swing on the rope swing.
And Christian gave Drew a quick lesson on his little skateboard (what he very aptly called ‘his baby’).
Walking to Long Bay Beach one day, we discovered a church very similar to Grace Center (which we miss terribly!). Everyone was so open and welcoming. Kathy, an American from California who married a Kiwi, even invited us over for dinner later that week!
We were sad to leave after 2 weeks with Christian & Kirianne and the girls, but now we have wheels (thanks to Ashley & Justin)! More on our first NZ road trip soon!
