It was so good to hear Bula Vinaka as we boarded our Air Pacific flight from Auckland to Fiji. There we were, headed back to Fiji. The last time we were there we were travel newbies, embarking on our first big overseas experience. It was incredible to reminisce on all we had seen, done, and learned since that time nine months ago. We bid a very bittersweet farewell to New Zealand as we flew away, able to locate most of our favorite beaches and neighborhoods on the North Shore as we flew overhead.
We felt the heat immediately when we stepped off the plane in Nadi. Not that I was complaining! Off came the jacket as we collected our bags and walked outside to meet Sera. She took us to the YWAM base where we got settled in and went to bed early.
The next day was full of preparations for the Personal Transformation Centre 5 year anniversary celebration! We walked into town with our sweet friend Kelera so she could buy potatoes and pick up her gorgeous handmade dress from the seamstress. Then we made our way to Sera & Sisa’s house (the base leaders) to capture some images of the lovo – a traditional underground oven.
First, a big hole was dug in the ground and a fire was lit.
Everyone sat around on mats preparing the food and enjoying each other’s company.
Whole chickens were wrapped up in leaves to be cooked in the lovo.
After all the food was packed in and covered, everyone took a break to throw around a rugby ball.
We came back just a few hours later for the unveiling. The food was loaded into handmade baskets and carted to the hotel in town where we celebrated all the lives that have been changed by the Personal Transformation Centre in the last five years. We were so honored to be guests that night. And yes-the food was ridiculously delicious.
