Our Lonely Planet travel guide describes the Pancake Rocks as usually being just a pit stop on the road trip down the west coast of the South Island. That’s exactly what it ended up being for us too, but I have to say this pit stop impressed us quite a bit more than it must have the Lonely Planet writers!
Our first glimpses of the ocean on the west coast were breathtaking. The ocean surged with power.
The rock formations here do look an awful lot like big stacks of pancakes.
What we were most impressed with, though, were the blowholes and surge pools. The sun was out, so every time the water spouted, rainbows would show up!
