Change. Why are many of us so afraid of it?
I am comfortable staying here. Yet this comfort has become uncomfortable to me. I like being around what makes sense to me, yet mystery has to be a part of my life. Lori and I agree that we are not satisfied, we are hungry for more.
So it might be time for us to go, time to change, time to shine out.
“Leave.
Roll the word around on your tongue for a bit. It is a beautiful word, isn’t it? So strong & forceful, the way you have always wanted to be. And you will not be alone. you have never been alone. Don’t worry. Everything will still be here when you get back. It is you who will have changed.”
~Donald Miller (Through Painted Deserts)
We are making ourselves uncomfortable doing this. My having hearing problems sure doesn’t help either. Sometimes I feel like God has drawn us into a kind of strange mode that He wants to be in and we don’t really realize it. It is just happening. We’re just letting ourselves be swept off onto this adventure. Expectant that we will be largely shaped by this shift in our life.
I look forward to this change because it causes creativity to happen. How? This is what I think: when something abnormal happens, you either flee from it/criticize it/stay right where you are in the rut of tradition & predictability. OR you adapt with it and go with the flow, that current you are caught into forces you to be creative. You use your mind, your hands, your whole body and emotions; your senses become sharp as a result.
I’ve seen it happen in stories and movies all the time. A recent example would be Shrek: Forever After. When he lost everything & everyone: the woman he loved, children, and friends, he came to realize what he really had and what he really loved. Then he used all his strength to get it back.
Creativity is something that many long to see more of in the Church. Admittedly there is a lot of tradition happening there, such as the same old routine every Sunday. It has become too predictable. And creativity has been avoided because it requires change.
Truth says that God never changes (Mal. 3:6). It is His nature that is perfect & unchanging, however He is always doing a new thing! He also does go to a different place suddenly.
“As the winds of change blow, it will be easy to distinguish between those who are satisfied and those who are hungry. Change brings the secrets of the heart to light.” ~Bill Johnson (Dreaming with God)
So change must happen. We must change to grow.
Change. The world needs it.
“Be the change you want to see in the world” ~Ghandi
“The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” ~ John 3:8
